St Boswells Primary School makes tracks!

Tuesday, November 20 2007

A team of youngsters from St Boswells Primary School have won a top prize in the ‘Making Tracks’ competition, a project based on the development of the Waverley Railway Line.

Following last year’s highly successful pilot, the project has now been rolled out across the whole region and more 300 pupils took part. There were four elements to the project including the design of an original layout for the Tweedbank Station, a newspaper article, a marketing poster and a costs sheet for the station. Plus an optional tourism leaflet design.

Judging took place on Monday 12 November with the Magical Mixers team from St Boswells Primary School taking the £175 first prize andtheWonderful Waverley team from Glendinning Primary School securing £100 for second place.

Representatives from St Boswells Primary School were presented with their cheque from sponsors Aitken & Turnbull Architects at a ceremony on Friday 16 November.

Caddonfoot Primary School also received a £150 cheque as the combined winners for the ‘Making Tracks’ project and the Scottish Borders Tourism Enterprise project, run by the Scottish Borders Tourism Business Forum.

Second was Duns Primary school.

The project was designed by the Borders Construction Industry Forum (BCIF) and funded by the ‘Determined to Succeed’ (DtS) initiative which has led to a diverse range of enterprising teaching and learning approaches in all schools in the Borders. DtS encourages pupils to generate new ideas, be innovative, improve their communication skills and participate in projects that will boost their confidence and self-esteem and instill in them a ‘can do’ attitude for life and for work.

The project was sponsored by Aitken & Turnbull Architects and the Scottish Borders Tourism Business Forum.

Bruce Rutherford, Waverley Railway Project Director said: "One of the main objectives of the new Waverley Line is to help encourage the young people of the Borders to remain living in the area and seek out increased opportunities. For that reason it is great to see how the children have embraced the challenge and produced some fantastic results.”

Charlotte Waugh from the BCIF added: “The project was a great success with an extremely high standard of entries received. Dozens of youngsters took part and the evaluation sheets proved very positive."

The judging panel included Riddell Graham, Visit Scotland Director of Communications and Partnerships; Bruce Rutherford, SBC Director of Waverley Railway project; Andrew Lester & David Burgher, Senior Partners Aitken & Turnbull Architects; Tracey Graham, Communications Assistant for Education at SBC; Marion Armitage of the Scottish Borders Tourism Business Forum and Mark Walton of the Borders Construction Industry Forum.
