New school transport guidance is launched by Scottish Borders Council

Monday, November 19 2007

Scottish Borders Council has updated its guidance for parents and pupils on school transport. The new booklet entitled ‘Home to School Transport - A Guide for Parents and Pupils’ was launched recently at Council headquarters by Councillor Catriona Bhatia, Executive Member for Education and Councillor Jim Fullarton, Executive Member for Roads and Infrastructure.

The booklet provides essential advice on entitlements for free school transport and how to resolve any difficulties encountered in using school transport.  This booklet will be available in all schools.

Councillor Bhatia emphasised the importance of the new booklet: “At SBC we are totally committed to making sure transport is safe and that children get to and from school without any problems. Not only are we requesting that seat belts are fitted in all new school contract buses, but it is also our priority to ensure parents and pupils themselves are aware of their role in this process. This is why I would like to urge all parents of children who use school transport to read the booklet and help their children familiarise themselves with it, so they are aware of the simple things they can do to help us at SBC make school journeys as safe and enjoyable as possible.”

Councillor Fullarton added: “We do hope pupils and parents find the new booklet useful.  We will be updating the guidance each year and continue our role in making transport work as smoothly and as safely as possible.  Hopefully this guidance will reinforce the message that everyone has their role to play in helping us at SBC make school transport safe - whether it be parents, pupils, school staff, bus drivers or taxi operators.”
