Calling All Borderers – cast your vote in a TV competition

Friday, November 16 2007

Three Borders community projects are set to battle for your TV vote to help them each win up to £80,000 of lottery cash.

The projects, all in Berwickshire, are in the running to receive the lottery cash through the Big Lottery Fund’s People’s Millions TV competition which will take place on Border TV’s Lookaround programme on Monday 26 November and Tuesday 27 November. Their success will depend on how many votes they can attract from every corner of the Borders and beyond.

The projects are Coldstream Community Centre, Coldingham Public Hall and Chirnside’s Playball!! Project. Five grants of up to £80,000 each are up for grabs and the local projects have a great chance of winning the cash if they can get the whole of the Borders behind them.

Jean Robertson, Scottish Borders Council’s Lottery Officer said: “All three communities have worked exceptionally hard for many years to develop their projects and this is a fantastic opportunity to finally realise their dreams. As an area we have done well to have three great projects competing out of eight in total from the ITV Border Region as a whole. But it is a competition and the three communities concerned are relying on the Borders people to vote or text their support on the night. I would ask that we all rally together in the true spirit of Borders support.”

So – remember to tune in to Lookaround at 6p.m. on November 26 and 27 and cast your vote. The telephone and text numbers will also be available on  www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/peoplesmillionsfrom 9a.m. on 26 November.

Colstream Community Centre is based in an old church which was bought by the community in 1998. Since then the community, through voluntary efforts, has refurbished much of the building which operates as a vibrant, community run centre. It runs a successful youth club, after school club and a range of other activities. This £80,000 grant will complete the long running refurbishment by completing the man hall, providing a store room, staging, lighting etc.

Coldingham Public Hall refurbishment has, after six years, almost reached completion. The hall provides a wide range of community services and activities and has a vibrant arts programme. This competition will convert the man hall into a multi functional space and includes retractable seating, lighting and sound equipment to allow the hall to be used as a fully equipped arts venue.

Chirnside Playball!! Project is a wide community project led by the Primary School. The £80,000 will, after 17 years of community action, create an all-weather outdoor sports facility. The aim is to provide a local facility that will integrate all ages in the community.
