‘Get Clicking Get Surfing’ is launched in Borders Libraries
Tuesday, November 6 2007
All Borders libraries are now offering free access to computer sessions as part of the ‘Get Clicking, Get Surfing’ programme which was launched recently.
The project provides introductory sessions in all SBC libraries for those who have never touched a PC (get clicking) and for the more experienced who want to know a little more (get surfing).
Councillor Graham Garvie, Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Community Education launched the initiative at Hawick Library. He said: “We are aiming this programme towards people who want to find their way around computers or the internet. This is their chance to be shown the ropes in a very user-friendly environment. Our library staff are very keen to help people who have never touched a keyboard to help them see how their lives can be enriched by being able to do simple things with a computer and best of all - it’s so much fun.”
The programme was made possible by a successful bid for funding from the Scottish Government’s Public Library Quality Improvement Fund, administered by the Scottish Library & Information Council. The bid of £18,450was one of ten successful applications this year and the funding runs until the end of March 2008.
The aims of the project are to:
- Increase computer literacy and use and access to learning and leisure opportunities especially in the 50+ age group
- Help build vibrant communities by giving older people access to new skills
- Increase staff confidence and IT skills to deliver better IT support to users and raise the profile of library facilities.
SBC Libraries are located across the region in Hawick, Galashiels, Peebles, Selkirk, Duns, Kelso, Coldstream, Earlston, Innerleithen, Jedburgh, Eyemouth and Melrose. The Scottish Borders Computer Bus will also be involved in the project. The bus already has various modules on offer for those who live in rural areas.
