Scottish Borders Woodland Partnership - The Use of Sustainable Wood Fuel

WOODENERGY SEMINARS - TO ANSWER THE BURNING QUESTION! This is a great opportunity to learn more about using wood fuel. Everyone has heard about climate change and the need to reduce global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Past reliance on fossil fuels has increased our CO2 emissions and, until recently, little thought was given to the consequences.
The burning of clean wood as a form of biomass does not contribute to climate change, provided it is from a sustainable source. The CO2 released in the burning process is balanced by the CO2 taken in during the tree’s lifetime, as long as new trees are planted to replace the ones that have been felled. There is a very small release of CO2 during the collection, processing and delivery of wood fuel but this is very low when compared with fossil fuels. And as Councillor Vicky Davidson, Executive Member for Economic Development, said, “Wood fuel is not only sustainable, but offers the opportunity to create jobs as we develop a local supply chain”.
With heating in all its forms currently accounting for about 50% of all energy consumption, there is a real opportunity to adopt wood as a sustainable alternative fuel which is:
competitive on cost
- more easily and reliably obtained
- helping to reduce harmful emissions.
It offers a remarkable opportunity to remove the reliance on fossil fuels for a wide range of energy needs. Wood fuel burning installations can provide a viable and practical option for the supply of heat and electricity for community schemes, private individuals and small businesses in the Borders.
