Happy digging at Newtown Primary School

Monday, November 5 2007

Newtown Primary School pupils gathered their trowels and headed outdoors for a unique gardening experience recently, thanks to Milestone Garden and Leisure Centre.

Milestone’s Steven Shann treated the P5/6 pupils to a planting demonstration and explanation of various different plants being donated from the garden centre for the memorial garden situated at the entrance of the school. The pupils then enjoyed planting their own flowers in the garden.

Tricia Watson, P5/6 class teacher, said: “This has been a great experience for the class. Not only have the pupils had the opportunity to work with people outside the school environment, but they have also gained a useful insight into the running of Milestone as well as getting to know the people who work there.”

Steven Shann explained his enthusiasm for the project: “We were delighted when the pupils contacted us to ask for help in their garden.  At Milestone we want to build relationships with the local community and help them whenever we can. Encouraging children to get out and learn about the environment is excellent and we hope this project is something the pupils can look after and develop in the future.”

Headteacher at Newtown, Margaret Nailen, added: “Not only does this garden link to various aspects of the curriculum such as our Enterprise work and eco-schools campaign, but it also helps pupils form important links with the local community, which is valuable for their personal development. Getting to know local people and businesses can lead to a sense of respect for their surrounding environment and we are very thankful to Milestone and all the other local businesses that support many of our projects throughout the school year.”

The garden is dedicated to a former nursery pupil Ruth Kiteley who died ten years ago. The pupils are looking forward to developing the garden over the forthcoming years in her memory.
