The new Scottish Borders campus – opportunities for Borders Businesses
Tuesday, October 23 2007
Nearly £50 million worth of investment will provide a state of the art ‘hub’ for lifelong learning and training at Netherdale, Galashiels when, in 2009, the new joint Further and Higher Education Campus opens, bringing Borders College and Heriot Watt University together.
Used to its full potential, this campus will be hugely important to the Borders economy, helping businesses with skills development and training as well as Research & Development. The campus will be highly attractive for students and highly effective for the delivery of modern education and training services. As well as co-location, there is a commitment from Borders College and Heriot-Watt University to not only provide their current portfolio of courses, training business services etc, but to increase co-operation and collaboration with other providers and users to ensure the campus is responsive to the needs of the region.
However, there is an urgent need for Borders businesses to explore how the campus can meet their needs. To start this process, the New Ways partners are holding a free seminar on Thursday 15 November from 9 a.m to 1.30 p.m at Tweed Horizons, which will bring representatives of key priority industries together with Heriot-Watt University, Borders College, Scottish Borders Council and Scottish Enterprise Borders. The morning will be a mixture of speakers from large and small businesses who have benefited from their relationship with the Further/Higher Education sector and workshops.
The seminar will provide the opportunity to:
- raise awareness of the resources and opportunities that will be available within the new campus
- hear what businesses in the Borders require from training providers
- identify opportunities to support training and skills development for Borders businesses
- highlight the potential for successful collaboration between the further and higher education sector and local industry.
It is hoped that this event will be the first step towards establishing ongoing collaboration between industry and the lifelong learning sector in the Borders.
