Iona has a window into local government

Friday, October 5 2007

Iona Stevenson, 17, a member of the Scottish Youth Parliament and a student at Earlston High School, had a window into local government on Tuesday when she shadowed Councillor David Raw, Executive Member for Social Work Services.

Encouraged by the Scottish Youth Parliament, an entirely youth-led organisation, Iona took this opportunity to learn about the work of the Council. As the collective voice for young people in Scotland, the SYP believes that young people in Scotland have the right to have their views listened to and acted upon.

Tuesday 2 October was an important day of Council business. Iona was able to see the processes of local government at first hand as papers on the updated local housing strategy, affordable housing task force and the Housing Act 2006 were presented by David and his officer team to Scottish Borders Council’s Administration Working Policy Group.

Iona said: “As a young person looking to the future I am particularly interested in the issue of affordable housing.“ Councillor Raw said: “It is a delight to have Iona here today and to see young people so interested in the political process”.
