Martyn receives prestigious finance award

Martyn Buckley, Scottish Borders Council's Accounting & Projects Manager, has been presented with the Tom Sowerby Award for 2007 by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA).
The award, which CIPFA describes as a high honour, is presented each year for outstanding service to CIPFA students. It was established by Tom Sowerby, president of CIPFA from 1973 to 1974. The Award was formally presented to Martyn by John Butler, President of CIPFA UK, at an awards ceremony in Reading in recognition of his ‘consistent and energetic’ commitment to CIPFA students as project examiner and professional adviser for over 20 years. Martyn’s achievement was also highlighted at yesterday’s Council meeting.
Martyn started as an examiner in 1985 when working at Perth & Kinross District Council and became Senior Examiner for Scotland in 1987. The role required a year-round commitment organising exams, training examiners, advising and assessing candidates in a variety of projects and ensuring overall quality standards.
"I will have overseen the projects of around 1,500 candidates over the years," Martyn explained. "A good number of these have gone to fill some very senior positions in public service financial management. In addition to a lot of work over the years, I have been lucky enough to work with public sector colleagues from across the UK and Ireland and have made some good friends."
