New ‘Simply Samplers’ exhibition at Hawick Museum
Friday, August 17 2007
A fascinating display of embroidered samplers, some of which were made in Hawick and other parts of the Borders in the 19th and early 20th Centuries, have been gathered from museums across the East of Scotland and will shortly be on display at Hawick Museum.
Often produced by young children, these beautiful objects give a valuable glimpse into another age with an emphasis on skills and self-improvement. It took many hours of practice to create these samplers, which often have surprising symbols and motifs included in their designs.
The exhibition is being held at Hawick Museum from Saturday 18 August until Sunday 30 September. Opening hours are Mon-Fri, 10a.m.-12noon and 1p.m.-5p.m. Sat & Sun 2-5p.m. Admission is free.
