Visitors flock to sample Flavour of the Borders at Border Union Show
Wednesday, August 15 2007
The Flavour of the Borders food fair at the recent Border Union Show has been hailed as the ‘best ever’ by joint organisers – SBC, Scottish Enterprise Borders and Borders College.
Now a main feature of the show, the team from the agencies worked hard with the Border Union Show organisers and local producers to provide two days of tasting, cooking and enjoyment.
The largest ever number of local producers took stand space – all of them extremely pleased with the numbers of visitors, estimated at 1500, who came through the fair and the amount of interest generated. New exhibitor Lucy Berguis with her ‘Cool As’ Farmhouse Ice cream was very impressed with the event: “I didn’t stop all day and have a whole load of new orders which will keep me going for ages – I was delighted,” she said.
New this year was a special trade evening – which involved an invitation to local catering businesses to visit the fair. A number of these, including staff from ASDA, came to sample and discuss orders. Another first for this year was a ‘chilled food creche’ which helped boost sales and a printed guide to the exhibitors.
The winners of the Best Stand competiton were:
- Best Border Stand – Border Meringues
- Best Non- Border stand – Carroll’s Heritage potatoes
- Best Overall stand – Oleifera Rape Seed oil – a new exhibitor
The Flavour of the Borders Food Fair is now established as one of the highlights of the Border Union Show and exhibitors are already asking about next year’s event
