SBC Leader David Parker to lead all of Scotland’s independent councillors

Wednesday, August 1 2007

Councillor David Parker, Leader of Scottish Borders Council, has been elected Leader of the independent members within COSLA (the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities).

This means that Councillor Parker will represent all independent councillors in Scotland – across all 32 local authorities – at COSLA meetings.

COSLA is the representative voice of Scottish local government and also acts as the employers’ association on behalf of all Scottish councils.

David Parker said: “It’s quite an honour to be chosen to represent the many Independent councillors in Scotland – as well as the seven other Independent council leaders we now have.”

Council Convener and Conservative Councillor Alasdair Hutton said: “My congratulations go to Councillor Parker on his election to this post. It is an honour for the Borders and shows that the talents of David Parker are being recognised at a high level.”

Liberal Democrat Group Chairman, Councillor Graham Garvie said: “David Parker’s appointment gives SBC even greater prominence in Scottish local government and will take us even closer to national negotiations and discussions with the Scottish Executive. This is very good news can only be a good thing for the Borders.”
