Romans arrive at Harestanes
Thursday, July 19 2007
Harestanes Countryside Visitor Centre near Ancrum welcomes the arrival of the Roman Army this summer with an exciting new exhibition looking at its impact on life in the Borders nearly 2000 years ago.
The exhibition entitled, ‘Ecce Romani – Romans in the Borders’ uses real objects and replicas as well as reconstructions to explore military and civil life in the region between Hadrian’s Wall and the Antonine Wall. A series of fun summer holiday Roman-themed craft activities, suitable for both children and adults, accompanies the exhibition.
“Ecce Romani is a great opportunity to see actual Roman artefacts from the Council museums’ archaeological collections”, explained Centre Manager, Michael Scott. “Although the Roman Army spent only a few decades in this far-flung outpost of the empire, they continue to loom large in our imagination.”
This popular touring exhibition is presented by Scottish Borders Council’s Museums and Galleries Service and is open daily from now until 27 August 2007, opening hours, 10am-5pm.
