What you should know about Autism
Thursday, July 19 2007
Just as the latest statistics on the rise of Autism in the UK emerge, two new sources of information are published in the Borders.
The new information leaflet ‘What you should know’, gives an overview of Autistic Spectrum Disorders. It dispels some of the myths about Autism, presenting the basic facts as well as a listing of local sources of information and support.
In addition, a new website, ASD Borders, hosts a wealth of local and national information including a list of the resources in the local library Autism Information Points – a collection of research papers and publications – and much more. The site is supported by the Onlineborders community grid and can be accessed at www.onlineborders.org.uk/site/microsites/asdborders where you can also see the leaflet.
One carer said, “I find the website a great help to me with its mix of local and national information. I want to learn as much as I can about ASD to help me care for my son.”
Autism and Asperger Syndrome are part of the Autism spectrum which commonly results in difficulties with communication, imagination and social relationships. Little was known about Autism until more recent times. One in a hundred people are affected by an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In the Borders this means there may be around 1,000 people with ASD.
Dr Cliff Sharp, Associate Medical Director for Mental Health, said: “NHS Borders welcomes these valuable new resources which will help support patients affected by ASD and their carers.”
A launch of the leaflet and website takes place from 10a.m. to 11.30a.m. on Monday 30 July 2007 in the Buccleuch Hotel, St. Boswells.
