‘Borders Ego Boosters’ Taster Day
Thursday, June 28 2007
A new group aims to promote self-esteem and boost the confidence of adults with physical disabilities.
A taster day to introduce the Borders Ego Boosters programme is taking place on Thursday 28th June at Ettrick Riverside in Selkirk, from 10.30am to 2pm.
Adults with a physical disability can go along to see how they can improve their confidence and self-esteem.
Sandra Towers and Keith Johnstone are involved in setting up a social enterprise to offer self-esteem sessions.
The programme is unique in that the sessions are facilitated by people with disabilities and tailored to suit individual needs. Keith said: “The difficulty is often finding the courage to get the ball rolling. A little change can make greater benefit seem possible.”
Maintaining healthy levels of self-esteem is the key to leading a positive and fulfilled life, but for many people with a disability maintaining a positive outlook is not easy. Negative messages, low expectations, reduced opportunities and discrimination are all facts of life for people with a physical disability.
Sandra added: “Ego Boosters is where we give everyone who attends tips for lightening their mood, thoughts and actions. Last year we ran a six week [More]
programme at the Ability Centre in Galashiels. It was well attended and the feedback from everyone was very positive. Now, we are setting up as a not for profit business as a way to offer the course to other people with physical disabilities across the Borders.”
