Pre-school footballers in for a treat this summer

Thursday, June 28 2007

Pre-school children in the Scottish Borders are being given the opportunity to practice their footballing skills over the summer holidays for the first time.

Following the successful Scottish Football Association (SFA) Mini-Kickers programme, which currently runs in 40 playgroups and nurseries across the region, Scottish Borders Council’s SFA Football Development Department has announced five new courses during the holidays as part of the Summer Holiday Coaching Programme.

The courses will take place in Duns, Eyemouth, Galashiels, Kelso and Peebles, for boys and girls aged three to five years.

Drew Kelly, SFA Football Development officer for Scottish Borders Council, said: “The SFA qualified coaches mix football and fun throughout the action-packed activity, and we are delighted to include the sessions in our holiday programme this year.

“The sessions are designed to improve the youngsters’ basic motor skills, hand to eye co-ordination and balance, as well as introducing activities associated to football. The courses are a huge success during term-time and we hope that youngsters come along to the courses over the summer as well”.

Councillor Graham Garvie, Executive Spokesman for Culture, Sport and Community Education, added: “It’s great that pre-school children in the Scottish Borders are being given the opportunity to take part in professionally organised football courses at such a young age.  All the SFA courses are designed to deliver appropriate content for all levels of players regardless of age, gender or ability, with a view to all players having fun as well as developing theirfootball skills.  I am sure many youngsters will be eager to pull on their football boots and get ready for the summer”.

The courses take place from 10am-11am and cost £12. Dates and venues are:

  • Woodside Park, Kelso,         9-13 July
  • Gytes Leisure Centre, Peebles, 16-20 July
  • Berwickshire High School, Duns, 23-27 July
  • Gunsgreen, Eyemouth, 30 July-3 August
  • Public Park, Galashiels, 6-10 August
