Appointments confirmed at SBC’s first post-election Council meeting

Scottish Borders Council Chamber was filled with faces familiar and new at the first post-election meeting today (Thursday 17 May 2007) when the new Administration coalition of Scottish Conservatives / Scottish Liberal Democrats and Independent councillors was welcomed.

The following Administration appointments were ratified:

Convener – Alasdair Hutton

Vice Convener – Ron Smith

Council Leader – David Parker

Deputy Leaders – Alex Nicol (HR), Neil Calvert (Finance)

Chair, Scrutiny – Donald Moffat, SNP

Chair, Standards – Neil Calvert

Chair, Development and Building Control – Jock Houston

Vice Chair, Development and Building Control – Trevor Jones

Lothian & Borders Police Board – Gavin Logan, Jim Hume

Lothian & Borders Fire Board – John Paton-Day, George Turnbull

SESTRANS – Jim Fullarton (substitute Catriona Bhatia), Neil Calvert (substitute Vicky Davidson)

Lothian & Borders Community Justice Authority – Sandy Scott (substitute David Raw)

Councillor Carolyn Riddell-Carre, Leader of SBC’s Scottish Conservative Group, said: “I am extremely pleased that the Administration has now been formally ratified as I am confident that we have a very strong team who will take Scottish Borders Council forward and continue to make some very positive changes for Borders residents.”

Councillor Alex Nicol, Leader of SBC’s Scottish Liberal Democrats, agreed: “Everyone in the new Administration is very much looking forward to working together to the benefit of the Borders people and to strengthen SBC’s reputation as a forward-thinking and effective local authority.”

Leader of the Independents, Councillor Michael Cook, said: “We have a really robust new Administration and some very positive policies that we will be working to implement – and people in the Borders will see on-going improvement. The formation of this coalition means good news all round.”

Councillor David Parker, who has once again been elected Council Leader, said: “I am more than happy that my colleagues in this new Administration have put their faith in my ability to lead the council. To continue this role will mean to continue to ensure that SBC is working to provide the best possible services at the best possible cost to Borders residents.”

Convener Alasdair Hutton said: “It is a great honour and a great responsibility to be again asked to be the Ambassador for this Council inside and outside the Borders and I shall do my best to live up to the task.  I am delighted to reprise my role as Convener of Scottish Borders Council and I look forward to four more years of sound governance and forward-thinking.”
