Calling all young musicians
Friday, May 11 2007
The instrumental music service of Scottish Borders Council is currently recruiting young musicians for the Saturday Morning Music Ensembles, which start again in September, and for the Wind and Chamber Orchestras which meet on weekend residential courses in October and March.
The Saturday Morning Music Ensembles are open to string, woodwind, brass and percussion who have achieved a level of playing equivalent to at least Associated Board Grade 1 (Junior String Orchestra and Junior Wind Band). String players of at least grade 3 standard and wind, brass and percussion who are grade 4 are encouraged to apply to the Borders Youth Orchestra. Chamber ensembles are formed according to demand, and are open to pupils of at least grade 5 standard.
The groups meet for three hours each Saturday, starting on the 1st September 2007, and finishing with concerts in Kelso on 25th November 2007. Thanks to funding from the Scottish Arts Council the orchestras are free, as is transport which is provided from most parts of the region. If young musicians are interested they can speak to their music teacher, who will have an application form, or telephone Simon Johnson, Senior Instrumental Instructor, on 01835 825097.
We are also recruiting members for the Regional Wind and Chamber Orchestras for which applicants should be at least grade 5 standard. Auditions take place in Hawick, Peebles, Duns and Galashiels in June, with the first residential weekend scheduled for the end of October. At their recent Melrose Parish Church concert the two orchestras performed a varied selection of music ranging from Vivaldi to Cole Porter. For more information telephone 01835 825097.
