Blue Light Disco Promotes Healthy Foods

Tuesday, February 27 2007

Scottish Borders Council’s Hungry for Success team were very pleased to promote healthy snacks to young people at February’s Blue Light Disco in Galashiels.

This month’s disco, which took place on Friday 23rd February at the town’s Focus Centre, included a special sampling session for the young people ranging from 12 - 18 years old. The session was designed to promote healthy eating options available in schools.

SBC's Hungry for Success Development Officer's, Eileen Easton and Frances Price, hosted the session and snacks served included muffins, carrot cake and banana bread as well as smoothies, all of which were then available to buy in the tuck shop.

Gillian Jardine of Dialogue Youth commented, “The aim of the night was to provide young people with the opportunity to sample alternative healthy snacks and participate in the fitness activities being run by qualified staff. They seemed to really enjoy what was being offered and from feedback we have received, this is something that we would look to provide at another disco.  By the end of the night all the snacks being sold at the tuck shop had disappeared!”

The event hopes to encourage young people to choose the healthier options which are now available in schools, by giving them the opportunity to sample the healthy snacks in a relaxed and social environment. The session was complimented by Tweedbank Gym and Galashiels Action for Teenage Development (GATE) who ran a fitness session with the young people.

Blue light discos have been running in Galashiels since September 2006 with the aim of creating a safe environment for young people to enjoy themselves. A key aspect of these events is that all tickets are pre-sold and on entry all young people are breathalysed and searched. Once inside, there are additional chill out areas provided which are supported by specific services such as health, Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade and the Reiver project who are there to offer support and interactive activities for the young people.

Blue Light Discos is a multi agency initiative which is run in partnership with the Police and Community Learning & Development and supported by the Focus Centre, Community Safety and Youth Chex.
