Very Strong HMIe Inspection Report for St Ronan’s Primary School and Nursery Class
Tuesday, February 27 2007
St Ronan’s Primary School, Innerleithen, was recently inspected as part of a national sample of primary and nursery class education.
In the report, St Ronan's was assessed against 14 indicators of quality and received a 'very good' rating for half of these and 'good' for the remainder. This is an excellent performance that reflects the hard work and dedication of pupils and staff.
The key strengths of the school identified by HMIe are:
- Confident, courteous and well behaved nursery children and pupils
- Teaching and support staff who worked very effectively as a team to support the care, welfare and achievement of all pupils
- Strong partnerships with the local community and support agencies
- Development of pupils’ wider achievements
- Pupils’ attainment in English language
- The effective start made by the head teacher to further improving the school.
Commenting on the report, headteacher Chris McKeesick said: “On behalf of everyone at St Ronan’s Primary School, I would like to say how delighted we are with the content, comments and advice in the recent HMIe report. As a team, we will address the recommendations in the report for the benefit of everyone in our learning community and:
- Build on the existing examples of best practice and improve the consistency in the quality of teaching and interaction with children across the school
- Improve the challenge and pace of more able pupils to meet their individual learning needs more effectively
- Further develop the learning environment in the nursery and early primary and improve joint working and continuity across this stage; and
- Improve aspects of accommodation identified in the report.”
Simon Allen, the Chairperson of the St Ronan’s School Board added his appreciation of the staff: “I wholeheartedly welcome the HMIe Report on St Ronan's Primary School. It provides a fair and balanced assessment and I am particularly pleased that the report acknowledges the recent improvements in pupils' attainment, and the supportive and rich learning environment provided by the School's staff.
“As a parent, I am also very pleased to read the report's favourable comments on the good behaviour and exceptional courtesy of the pupils. The report also notes the school's close ties with the community, which I believe provide an important foundation for the school's success. I hope that these ties will be further strengthened by establishment of the new Parents' Council that will replace the School Board in the summer.”
Mr Allen concluded “Overall, the report clearly portrays a good school that is getting even better. The School Board welcomed the positive suggestions contained in the report for further improvements to the school and looks forward to the action plan that will be developed jointly by the school and the education authority. “
