Local libraries participate in LGBT history month
Monday, January 29 2007
The month of February has been designated LGBT History Month in the UK. It is an opportunity to celebrate the lives of people throughout history who today might identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender. February provides groups, organisations and individuals with the opportunity to explore these hidden histories.
2007 is going to be the biggest history month yet with more than 145 events happening across Scotland. In the Borders, libraries in Earlston, Eyemouth, Galashiels and Duns will be displaying history month resources and Duns library will host an exhibition for the month of February starting on Tuesday, February 6th. The exhibition will document some of the experiences of LGBT people and showcase a range of memorabilia and literature.
In a parliamentary debate at Holyrood last week, South of Scotland MSP Chris Ballance referred to the Borders libraries’ involvement in history month and voiced his support for national events:
“One of the most positive aspects of LGBT history month is that a wide range of organisations will be working together to provide the programme of events throughout Scotland,” he said.
A full listing of events can be found at www.lgbthistory.org.uk.
In 2006 the Scottish Executive Commissioned LGBT Youth Scotland to take LGBT History Month forward in Scotland. To date, a toolkit and series of resources have been produced to support groups and individuals who want to celebrate LGBT History.
LGBT Youth Scotland was previously known as Stonewall Youth (Scottish Charity no. SC024047) – a non-political youth charity that provides services and opportunities for LGBT young people aged 13-26 across Scotland.
