Completion of Melrose one-way scheme
Wednesday, January 24 2007
Scottish Borders Council will start work to formalise the Melrose one-way system today. The works will entail major improvements to the layout in Market Square and the completion of the existing temporary layouts in High Street, Buccleuch Street and Abbey Street.
Re-surfacing of the road in Market Square and the length of the High Street from Market Square to its junction with Buccleuch Street will also take place.
The layout of Market Square will see a major change from the temporary layout which has been in place during the period of the experimental one–way system. The existing arrangements will be amended to provide a more 'pedestrian-friendly' layout and will retain the current level of parking spaces.
This layout will incorporate two contained paved areas bounded by a low wall divided by two sets of steps. The new pedestrian areas will be constructed using natural stone walls and paving slabs and include increased seating and planted areas.
Work is scheduled to take 16 weeks and access to premises will be maintained at all times.
