Borders Lotto Success Reaches 1000 Projects

Thursday, January 11 2007

December, 2006 saw the figures for successful Borders lottery applications break the 1000 project mark. Some 1020 lottery funded projects have been delivered in the Scottish Borders totalling £30.6 million - this is more that £280 per person living in the Borders.

Since the Lottery began late in 1994 it has raised £19 billion for  ‘good causes’ and has supported the arts, heritage, sport, charities, community and voluntary groups, as well as projects concerned with health education and the environment.

The Borders are competing well in the lottery league tables and are currently eleventh out of the 32 Local Authorities in Scotland.

Jean Robertson, Scottish Borders Council (SBC) Lottery Officer commented, ‘This is a milestone event for the Borders and a real indication and endorsement of community action, effort and volunteering that reflects the real strength of our Borders communities. Projects of all sizes have been funded from £500 to £2.1 million and funding has gone to almost every community in the Borders. The lottery small grant scheme, Awards for All, is particularly supportive of local projects and up to £10,000 is available to help communities to develop and deliver their plans’.

There are a variety of funding opportunities freely available. If you are looking for funding for your project or idea, please contact Jean at SBC Headquarters on 01835 826543 online or your local Council of Voluntary Service.

National Lottery Information

The Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) has responsibility within Government for National Lottery policy, and sets the policy and financial framework within which the distributing bodies for National Lottery grants operate.

We also sponsor the National Lottery Commission, which regulates the National Lottery game and the game operator. The Commission's duties are to protect players' interests, to ensure that the Lottery is run properly, and to maximise the amount raised for good causes.

The proceeds of the National Lottery support the arts, heritage, sport, charities and community and voluntary groups as well as supporting projects concerned with health, education and the environment.

There are currently 13 independent distributing bodies responsible for awarding Lottery grants.  These bodies make their grant decisions independently of Government and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Following the announcement that the 2012 Olympic Games will be hosted by London, an additional distribution body has been established - the Olympic Lottery Distributor.

To apply for a Lottery grant you can contact the relevant distributing body through the Lottery Funding website or by telephoning the Lottery Funding Hotline on 0845 275 0000You can give your comments on the Lottery Funding website by taking part in this survey, which runs until February 2007.

The National Lottery Act, an important element of the Government's reforms to the National Lottery, was reintroduced on 24 May 2005. It aims to make the Lottery more responsive to people's priorities and to ensure that Lottery money goes efficiently to good causes. For further information see National Lottery Act.
