Royal Mail Awards for Scottish Children’s Books
Friday, December 15 2006
Junior library members across the Borders recently took part in the judging of a brand new children’s book award.
Children and young people in schools, libraries and bookshops right across Scotland joined in the judging, and local Children’s Book Groups held in the libraries at Duns, Melrose and Hawick looked at the selection of new children’s books, and took part in the voting process. The winners are:
- Early years 0-7 years - Little Lost Cowboy by Simon Puttock and Caroline Jayne Church
- Younger readers 8-12 years - Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince by J K Rowling
- Older readers 13-16 years – Roxy’s Baby by Catherine MacPhail
The awards were presented recently to the winning authors and illustrators in the new Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh. Catherine MacPhail will visit the School Library Resource Centre at Peebles High School to talk to pupils about her writing in January.
Gill Swales, Young People’s Services Coordinator for Scottish Borders Council Library Service said: "This new award is a great opportunity for children to be involved in reading, assessing, and discussing new books, and to feel involved with the judging process."
The awards are organised for The Royal Mail by the Network for the Scottish Children's Book, BRAW.
