Council lawyers shortlisted in the LGC awards

Tuesday, December 19 2006

The Scottish Borders Council (SBC) Legal Services section is one of six finalists in the Legal Team category in the prestigious Local Government Chronicle (LGC) awards 2007.

These UK awards for Local Government look at principal achievements between October 2005 and September 2006.

The Legal Team’s application contained an innovative summary of how the team had played a central role in many areas of council service delivery during the last 12 months. The Council’s Legal Service provided evidence of their involvement in partnerships, service innovation, regeneration and community leadership and how this work had benefited citizens.

The application outlined twenty of the major projects of which the team are justifiably proud. These included  the Waverley Railway (Scotland) Act 2006, Schools PPP, Broadband, mock Court trials for school students, assistance for disability initiatives, the redevelopment of Galashiels town centre to a sponsored customer survey, to name but a few.

Ian Wilkie, Head of Legal Services, stated that, "I am absolutely delighted that the SBC Legal Team has been chosen as one of the six finalists and that we are the only Scottish Council shortlisted for the Legal category. It was quite an eye opener to summarise our many achievements throughout the year and to recognise the dedication and hard work of the whole team. The winner will be announced on the 12 March 2007 and we look forward to hearing the results."

Councillor Michael Cook, Portfolio Holder for Community Planning and Corporate Resources at SBC, said "It is rare that we acknowledge the sterling work of our legal staff who are constantly working diligently on behalf of this Council and the community it serves. Their contribution is critical, whether delivering state of the art High Schools through Public Private Partnership (PPP), or creating policies which ensure fair and equitable treatment for all. This deserved accolade is a timely reminder of the contribution of Legal Services."
