Friday, November 17 2006
The SFA 13’s development squad has been selected and the budding young footballers have started their weekly coaching programme at the Tweedbank complex.
The new influx of local football talent has been chosen from all over the Borders with players coming from Peebles, Hawick, Galashiels, Selkirk. They will join St Johnstone player Andy Lawrie and Gala FC Head of Youth Development Garry Fraser to train at Tweedbank on a weekly basis.
Dougie Anderson, SFA Senior Football Development Officer for Scottish Borders Council explained how the selection process was one of the most difficult he has endured for a number of years. "The standard of players attending our trials this year was higher than any previous years, making it one of the most difficult squads we've ever had to select. We had around sixty players attending the trials from all over the Borders, and then had the task of to selecting the best twenty players."
"We have fantastic dedicated and knowledgeable coaching staff and we are delighted to have added Mark Lamb and Alan Brown from Peebles FC, Derek Paterson from Kelso FC and Bruce Crockett from Ancrum FC to our staff. We are also pleased to welcome ex-Rangers Goalkeeper, Andy Bruce to the coaching staff who is going to giving our young goalkeepers specialised coaching. This can only help with their development in this specialised field – the youngsters have already really taken to Andy’s coaching routines."
Anderson added, "There are around sixty players in total involved in the programme with three age groups at 13’s, 14’s and 15’s and who knows… there could be another Danny Galbraith within this new batch of Borders talent trying to emulate him and ending up playing at Old Trafford!"
