Scottish Border Council’s James Thomson Footbridge in Hawick was shortlisted in the Pedestrian Bridge category at this year’s Structural Awards 2006.
The competition attracted 150 entries across 11 categories. The James Thomson Footbridge appeared in the final four in its category, narrowly missing first place to the Sean O'Casey Footbridge in Dublin.
The structural awards are the world’s pre-eminent awards for structural engineering excellence. Run by The Institution of Structural Engineers since 1968, these annual awards celebrate the work of the world’s most talented structural designers and their indispensable contribution to the built environment.
SBC were delighted with the positive feedback from the judges, who said: "The structural engineers have provided an inspirational structural solution using high quality finishes and long life materials – a monument for the local community to be proud of."
Robert Young, Head of Engineering and Property in the Technical Services Department at SBC, said: "We would like to thank Gifford, the structural engineering company responsible for the detailed design of the bridge, who also submitted the bridge for these prestigious awards."
"The standard of the competition was very high and it was an excellent achievement to reach the final four in this category, particularly since the overall winner of the category was a bridge of a different scale. The Council are very proud of the finished structure."
