Galashiels Inner Relief Road – Currie Road scheme due to open on Monday

Wednesday, November 15 2006

Galashiels Inner Relief Road – Currie Road Scheme – being constructed by Scottish Borders Council, is due to be opened on Monday, 20th November 2006.

Galashiels Inner Relief Road – Currie Road Scheme – being constructed by Scottish Borders Council, is due to be opened on Monday, 20th November 2006.

Although the Waverley Railway underbridge on Station Brae will not be completed by then, the road network will be opened up to the public and access will, on the whole, return to normal.  The exception to this is the link between Currie Road and Melrose Road which is detailed below:

Pedestrian Routes

All of the previous pedestrian diversions will be removed from 20 November 2006.  Pedestrians will be able to access the Health Centre, the Church and all of the businesses and properties in the Currie Road and Langhaugh areas following the same routes as were used prior to the roadworks starting – plus the new Gala Water Bridge.  These routes are as follows:

•         via the Market Street footpath link alongside Anderson’s Chambers to Currie Road;

•         via Ladhope Vale and along Currie Road;

•         to and from Melrose Road via Station Brae;

•         across the new bridge over the Gala Water.

Traffic Routes and Ongoing Diversions

Vehicular access to Currie Road, including all of the facilities in this area, will be via Currie Road junction of Ladhope Vale and the new Gala Water Bridge of Paton Street and Huddersfield Street.

It has not been possible to complete the new rail structure sufficiently far to allow the permanent road to be constructed between Melrose Road and Currie Road.  However, a temporary link road has been constructed which will be open to vehicles under 3 tonnes maximum gross weight (3t m.g.w.).

Vehicles over this weight will be required to use the existing diversions that are in place along Winston Road, Tweed Road, Abbotsford Road and the one way system around Galashiels town centre.  These diversion routes will continue to be sign-posted as before.

The temporary link road will also operate under a priority system whereby vehicles leaving the Station Brae Roundabout will have priority over those vehicles travelling down from Melrose Road.

All drivers are asked to take particular care when using the new road network as the layout has changed significantly and will be unfamiliar to begin with.

Vehicles approaching Galashiels from Gattonside, Melrose and the East are encouraged to use the Melrose Bypass (A6091) to enter Galashiels along Abbotsford Road.

Glenfield Crescent remains closed and Glenfield Terrace remains one-way for local traffic exiting on to Melrose Road.

Bus Services

Bus services will continue to be diverted as necessary. Please see bus operator’s timetables for details.

David Green, Galashiels Developments Programme Manager said: "I’d like to thank the public in Galashiels for their co-operation and patience during the earlier phases of the roadworks. Given the new changes to the road network and the ongoing diversions there may be some initial delays and difficulties for road users, especially as two new superstores will open in Galashiels on Monday, 20 November and Monday, 4 December 2006.  I would therefore ask for the continued co-operation and patience of road users and would suggest that travelling outwith peak times, car-sharing, using public transport, cycling and walking will all help to reduce the traffic flows in and around Galashiels and make the road network operate more efficiently."
