Cockburnspath Primary pupils take starring role in Children in Need

Tuesday, November 14 2006

Excitement was growing this week at Cockburnspath Primary School, as the primary seven pupils looked forward to appearing live on television as part of the BBC’s Children in Need programme this Friday (17th).

The 13 youngsters will be accompanying folk singer Karine Polwart when she performs one of her songs 'I'm Gonna Do It All' – which has been adopted as the school’s anthem.

Head Teacher Hugh McAleese approached the singer after hearing the song on a CD. He said: "It's a song all about succeeding, following your dreams and never giving up so I thought it would be a good song to take as a school anthem. I emailed Karine and her manager to ask permission to do this and she ended up coming out to the school to run a music workshop."

"At that time, she also mentioned that she'd be appearing on Children in Need and that she'd be in touch if she needed any children to perform with her."

The Cockburnspath pupils will join youngsters from a School in East Kilbride, who have also used Karine's song, live on TV on Friday night for a short slot sometime between 7pm and 8pm.

Mr McAleese added: "There's a lot of excitement building up. It will be a great day for the P7s as they'll be arriving at the BBC studios in Queen Margaret Drive, Glasgow, at 1pm – so they'll be there for a long time rehearsing and meeting people. We're told that the Sugababes and Lamar will be there on the day so the children are really hoping to bump into them."

Councillor Andrew Farquhar, SBC Joint Executive Education spokesman said: "This is a great opportunity for the Cockburnspath Primary pupils and I wish them every success with their performance on the night. I'm sure they'll all be in good voice and will have a fantastic time."
