Cheaper travel for Borders teenagers
Tuesday, November 14 2006
Good news for 16-18-year-olds living in the Borders is that, from January 2007, they will get a discount on bus and rail travel throughout the whole of Scotland.
The Scottish Executive has just launched the National Entitlement Card scheme, which means that teenagers in the qualifying age group will be able to claim a third off single bus fares across the country and a third off rail travel throughout Scotland.
The scheme is being co-ordinated in the Borders by Dialogue Youth. Representatives are currently visiting all secondary schools in the area to make sure all entitled pupils receive their card. Arrangements will also be put in place to reach all 16-18-year-olds no longer attending school who are either in or out of work or attending Borders College. Full-time volunteers up to the age of 25 who are actively contributing to their community will also be included in the scheme. Arrangements for registering non school-pupils for the National Entitlement Cards will be publicised at a later date.
Anyone aged 16 or over in January 2007 will receive their card that month. Everyone else will receive their card on their 16th birthday.
Notes for Editors:
Dialogue Youth - is a dynamic initiative that enables young people to have their voices heard and become active citizens in their local community. Through Dialogue Youth, young people will be able to engage fully in the community planning process enabling them to inform and influence decisions that are taken on their behalf and make informed choices. Dialogue Youth also provides a platform for young people to express their views and opinions through outlets such as the Young Scot website and by linking in with pupil councils, youth forums and other youth participation structures. Dialogue Youth in the Scottish Borders is delivered through a partnership between the voluntary youth work sector, Council departments and public sector agencies.
