HMIe Inspection: Eyemouth Primary School

Tuesday, October 17 2006

An HMIe inspection of Eyemouth Primary School, which took place in June 2006, has identified several very important strengths of the school.

These were:

  • The Headteacher’s focus on ensuring high quality learning and teaching.  The curriculum was judged to be of a good quality and the school had good arrangements to ensure progressive learning experiences across the curriculum.  The report also recognised the many opportunities afforded to pupils beyond the curriculum.
  • Staff commitment to ensuring pupils’ emotional and physical welfare.  Pupils reported they found staff caring and approachable.  Healthy eating was promoted in the school and a well established routine of teeth brushing.
  • Teamwork amongst teaching staff in improving the school’s curriculum and evaluating the quality of learning and teaching.  The report also recognised the high quality leadership of the Headteacher who had a clear vision for the school and the very good support she received from the Depute Headteacher and Principal Teachers. • Partnership with parents and their high levels of involvement in their children’s education. Parents were very positive about the school and were kept well informed about the work of the school through regular high quality newsletters and reports.

The Headteacher, Mrs Robertson, said, “We were delighted to see that the Inspectors recognised the school’s focus on high quality teaching and learning and that they were confident we have the capacity to deliver a high standard of education for all of our children. The recognition of the superb team work of the staff was exactly what makes our school so successful.”

Mr McMurdo, chairman of the School Board said "I am very pleased that the inspectors' report has highlighted the dedication of the staff in the school as well as the close partnership with parents.  I am in no doubt that the staff will readily address the two areas for further development identified in the report."

The inspectors identified only two areas for further development by the school.  These were to:

  • Continue to raise levels of attainment in English language and mathematics.
  • Further develop independence and appropriate challenge in pupils’ learning, including pupils’ use of information and communications technology.

The Education authority and the school are now working together to take forward the recommendations made in the report.
