Care provider announced for supported housing service at Todlaw

Friday, October 6 2006

Scottish Borders Council and NHS Borders have appointed Community Integrated Care (CIC) to run their new, community based supported housing service for disabled people at Todlaw, Duns. This new facility is due to be completed in September 2007 and become operational the following month.

Eleven organisations tendered to provide the housing and respite care service, and five were shortlisted. CIC was judged the best on value for money, quality of the proposed service and ability to deliver it.

The new supported development at Todlaw will provide 24-hour, community-based care and nursing to former residents of Marchmont House, near Duns. The accommodation at Marchmont is being replaced with the new, purpose-built development at Todlaw, which will provide a new model of care to best address the needs of those with a particular level of disability.

Each of the 14 residents will have his or her own specially built, one-bedroomed or two-bedroomed house, with kitchen, living room and individually adapted bathroom. There will also be a shared area where people will be able to eat or socialise together if they wish, and office space on site. The service will be jointly funded by SBC and NHS Borders.  Berwickshire Housing Association are building the properties.

Andrew Lowe, SBC Director of Social Work, said, "Community Integrated Care has many years' experience of providing top-class care to people with complex care needs. CIC tendered a really impressive proposal on quality, delivery and value for money. We are confident that Todlaw will offer its residents the best in terms of care, independence and quality of life and I take this opportunity to thank Sue Ryder Care for their input over a number of years in this demanding area of care."

John Glennie, NHS Borders Chief Executive, said: "I am delighted another excellent provider in CIC has been appointed to take over from Sue Ryder Care who have provided a much respected service from Marchmont House over many years.  The new service to be provided by CIC at Todlaw will give a magnificent opportunity for the tenants to extend their independence and integration with the community."
