NEWS RELEASE
The event will be the first chance for parents and friends of the players to hear preparations for the ensembles’ annual concert at the Tait Hall, Kelso, on Sunday 26 November. The concert will feature a range of composers and musical styles, including Holst and Delibes (Youth Orchestra and String Chamber Ensemble), Johnny Vincent (Junior Wind Band) Sheila Nelson and Peter Prelleur (Junior Strings).
The rehearsal is being planned in conjunction with Borders Young Musicians (BYM), the Parent Teachers’ Association which supports the orchestras. On the day of the rehearsal, BYM will hold a coffee morning at Galashiels Academy, with an exchange of CDs and used-sheet music and a raffle. This will be followed by its Annual General Meeting in the canteen.
Last year BYM provided grants to enable pupils to attend local and national music courses. It also commissioned ‘Lilliard’, an orchestral suite composed by James Letham and performed in Kelso in March, purchased music stands and provided general support at a number of music events. [more]
At least two long-serving BYM committee members intend to stand down at the AGM, and it is vital, if BYM is to continue to support the orchestras, that new parent volunteers come forward.
The Junior String Orchestra will rehearse in Galashiels’ Academy’s Assembly Hall from 9.45am, the Junior Wind Band from 10.45am and the String Chamber Ensemble and Borders Youth Orchestra from 11.30am
At other times the various groups will split into their sections and rehearse in rooms around the Academy. Visitors will be handed a map on arrival at the school.
