Council seeks business experts for Audit Committee

Thursday, September 7 2006

Scottish Borders Council is looking for business experts to join its highly regarded Audit Committee. The two new external members must have substantial experience of finance or management within large organisations. They should also be good at problem solving and have independent, enquiring minds.

SBC’s Audit Committee oversees the way each Council department operates and encourages improvement where needed. It reviews the Council’s risk management arrangements and the work of internal and external auditors and other inspection agencies, and is responsible for ensuring high standards of internal control, risk management and corporate governance.

The Committee was recently singled out for praise by Audit Scotland and its external auditors, Scott Moncrieff, as an example of best practice among councils in Scotland. One particular strength, Audit Scotland said, is SBC’s willingness to recruit two external members with valuable business and audit experience to work with the five SBC Councillors who make up the rest of its membership.

External members must attend four scheduled meetings per year, plus Audit Committee training and development events. The appointment will be for a fixed period from 1 November 2006 to 31 October 2009. The posts are voluntary, although travel and subsistence expenses are paid.

If you would like to be considered for this appointment, please send your details to Sylvia Seivwright, Administrative Officer to the Audit Committee, on 01835 824000 or e-mail to sseivwright@scotborders.gov.uk.

If you would like to discuss the role informally, please contact Jill Stacey, Chief Internal Auditor, on 01835 825036 or John Campbell, Director of Corporate Resources, on 01835 825015.

The vacancies have a closing date of 22 September 2006.
