SFA seeks Borders talent for youth development squad

The Scottish Football Association is looking for a new batch of Borders youngsters to join its 13s Development Squad for the forthcoming season. The first trials of young footballing talent are due to start on 7 September.

Through Scottish Borders Council, the SFA is targeting S1 pupils who were  born on or after January 1994. Those selected will be coached weekly by qualified coaching staff and play a series of matches against other teams from the South East region.

As an added bonus, they will also have the opportunity to join the South East Region squad, which is made up of players from the Edinburgh, the Lothians and the Borders. This will be coached by former Hibernian favourite Keith Wright and SBC’s Senior Football Development Officer, Dougie Anderson.

“This is a brilliant opportunity, not to be missed,” said Dougie Anderson. “We have had great success with players who have come through the SFA squads in recent years and gone on to greater things. The most recent was Galashiels youngster Danny Galbraith, who has signed for Manchester United.

“We also have a number of youngsters playing with their local East of Scotland clubs which has helped raise the standard of Borders football.”

SBC is hoping that as many youngsters as possible will have the opportunity to be part of the programme:

“We have already contacted all local clubs asking them to nominate players for the annual trials, but our experience in the past has shown that not all players were aware of the trials because not all youngsters play football locally,” said Dougie.

“I would urge any parents or coaches who know of any individuals who fit the criteria to get in touch.”

The first trials will take place at 6.30pm on Thursday 7 September at Tweedbank Sports Complex, Galashiels.
