Floral Gateway competition gets ready for the winning results
Monday, August 14 2006
A panel of judges have just completed a tour of towns and villages in the Scottish Borders to select the winners of Scottish Borders Council’s annual Floral Gateway Competition.
The Competition, which has been running successfully for 6 years, consists of four categories split by population size into the following; Town, Large Village, Small Village and Wee Village. Each entry is assessed based on the quality of the floral display itself, the general quality and standard of cleanliness in the town or village, and the level of community involvement from individuals to organisations and schools.
This year the judges, some of whom also judge the Beautiful Scotland in Bloom Competition, have carefully assessed all 17 entries. The keenly awaited results will be announced at an awards ceremony at 7.30pm on Tuesday 29 August at Council Headquarters, Newtown St Boswells. The ceremony will be attended by competition entrants, industry representatives and SBC Councillors and employees. Trophies and certificates of excellence will be awarded to category winners.
Jason Hedley, SBC’s Parks Manager, hopes the success of this year’s competition will attract even more entries in 2007. Jason tells us, “We have been really impressed with this year’s competition entrants, the competition creates a great opportunity to get people involved in the green scene, and the communities in the Borders have a lot to be proud of in that respect. We are delighted to have already received interest from communities wishing to take part in next year’s event”.
SBC are also delighted to hear that the floral displays in Galashiels and Melrose are strong contenders in the Beautiful Scotland in Bloom competition, results of which will be announced on 13 September.
