Cycling Festival to centre on Hawick this year

Wednesday, July 26 2006

The Scottish Borders Cycling Festival will be held in Hawick this year on Saturday 26 August and Sunday 27 August.

The annual Festival provides a great opportunity to explore some of Britain’s most spectacular scenery, while enjoying the region’s history and culture.

Hawick has one of the oldest cycling clubs in Scotland, and boasts a long association with the sport. All the Cycling Festival routes this year have been devised by club members.

On both days, cyclists can chose from three road routes or one off-road route. The rides are graded to suit all abilities, from gentle, family rides to challenging 45-mile and 55-mile routes for real enthusiasts. Cyclists can join either day or both. Experienced local guides lead the rides and there is back-up in case of problems.

Rides are free for under-14s, £8 each for adults. Those under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. All routes start and finish at Hawick Cycling Club, just off Hawick High Street.

Festival Project Co-ordinator, John McBay, said, “We believe the Borders offers some of the best cycling in the UK, and the festival is designed to help people discover it. Whether you’re interested in touring wonderful scenery, whether you are looking for varied and challenging road riding or if you want a thrilling off-road trail, the festival has it all.”

Scottish Borders Councillor Val Robson, Patron of this year’s Cycling Festival, said she was delighted to be involved, and was particularly impressed at the amount of work that had been done to organise and promote the Festival.

‘When I was young, cycling was a daily activity for travelling to work and for leisure and pleasure. Everyone seemed to have a bike.  Nowadays it is really good to see cycling growing in the Borders. We have to thank our Sports Development team and all the Hawick volunteers for making the wheels turn on another successful and exciting event. This is a boost for cycling and the Scottish Borders.”
