A clear view of the coastline -

The Scottish Sustainable Marine Environment Initiative (SSMEI) is an experimental project to help communities become more involved in the management of shorelines and coastal areas. It is funded by the Scottish Executive, Scottish Natural Heritage, Scottish Borders Council and Leader+.
One of its four areas is the Berwickshire coastline, and on Thursday, 27 July SSMEI's newly appointed Project Officer, Christopher Cutts, will be hosting a drop-in consultation for the public at Eyemouth Community Centre.
He would like to hear your views and opinions on the local use of the marine environment and how it is managed. In turn, he will answer your questions on the new initiative.
Dr Cutts will be at Eyemouth Community Centre on 27 July from
10.00am to 12 noon, 1.00pm to 5.00pm, and 6.00pm to 8.00pm.
The Berwickshire coast has a long history of marine resource use, with a traditional reliance upon fishing as the main source of employment. However, more jobs along the coastline are now being created in diversified sectors such as recreation and tourism.
The key elements of the Berwickshire pilot are to investigate the socio-economic benefits from current marine use, establish a series of individual projects to demonstrate the benefits of sustainable management, and to develop community support for sustainable development by encouraging community stewardship of the marine environment.
