SBC provides £1,400 for Earlston Civic Week Ball

Monday, July 10 2006

Earlston Civic Week had a Ball on Friday, thanks to £1,400 from Scottish Borders Council. SBC made the one-off funding available from its Community Grant Scheme to help the town cover the costs of a new Ball planned for its annual Civic Week.

The additional funding comes on top of a £2,750 core grant that SBC already gives Earlston to support existing events held during Civic Week.

Commenting on the funding award, SBC Leader, Councillor David Parker, said, "We are delighted to support this application on a one-off basis.  Although the Council cannot always give additional Community Grant Scheme funding to organisations that already receive core funding, we have made an exception in Earlston's case because the Civic Week Ball aims to become self-funding, and this is one-off growth funding to establish the event. I am conscious that a great number of volunteers work very hard in Earlston to organise and run the town's Civic Week. In this case I am happy to see the money going to Earlston and hope that everybody enjoyed the Ball."

Councillor Miles Browne, SBC member for Earlston, Gordon & District, said, "I am very pleased that Earlston Civic Week received funding. Local residents have worked very hard and I have supported their funding from the start and am happy that we now have a resolution to help them with the cost of running their new Ball."

A review of the Community Grant Scheme criteria is likely to be carried out, to clarify what kind of support Common Ridings and Festivals can apply for, over and above their core funding.

The Scottish Borders Council Community Grant Scheme has been designed to provide limited support to voluntary groups and organisations that are active within their communities, and to assist communities or interest groups with the development of community based projects.

The Fund is provided by Scottish Borders Council and is divided up annually between each of the five Area Committees (Berwickshire, Cheviot, Eildon, Teviot & Liddesdale and Tweeddale), with an amount reserved for Borders-wide and non Borders-based groups. The amounts provided are subject to periodic review by Scottish Borders Council.
