Council welcomes Tesco preservation offer

Wednesday, July 5 2006

Scottish Borders Council has welcomed the recent announcement by Tesco that the company will preserve the frontage of the Government Buildings in Galashiels after the buildings are demolished to make way for a new store.

Councillor David Parker, Leader of Scottish Borders Council said today,

"The Council welcomes Tesco’s decision to preserve the front of the current Government Buildings so that it can be re-erected in a suitable location. Tesco as a developer has stated that it can be incorporated as part of a housing or other commercial development.  The onus is now on Tesco to find and negotiate a suitable site and to undertake or facilitate a commercial development.

The Council will be happy to provide pre-application planning advice as to the suitability of potential sites.  The Council looks forward to a formal approach by Tesco.
