Big Weekend promises to be best ever
Thursday, June 29 2006
Thousands of live music fans are expected to converge on Netherdale in Galashiels on Saturday for the biggest event of the Borders' music calendar - the Big Weekend, sponsored by Scottish Borders Council and Radio Borders.
Last July's Big Day Out was such a sell-out success that this year the event has been extended to include a Big Day Out on
Saturday 1 July and The Big Shindig on Sunday 2 July, making up a Big Weekend of two days' of live music and non-stop entertainment.
Scottish pop icons Deacon Blue will be heading the line up on Saturday, with The Saw Doctors headlining Sunday's action. The
event also features This R2 Tone, Scocha, Counterfeit Beatles, Omniblob, Borders Boogie Band and Schooglenifty.
Throughout The Big Weekend, the Radio Borders Road Show will be broadcasting live, bringing the festival to 125,000-plus listeners
and helping the party to go with a swing.
Iain Burke, one of the event's organisers, said, "We anticipate between 4,000 and 6,000 people to attend, and, judging by
ticket sales, there is a huge percentage from outside the local area. This is obviously good for the local economy. "Last
year the event sold out and people weren't able to get tickets, so this year we have increased the capacity with a bigger
venue to accommodate everyone. As well as this, we have a Box Office open all weekend from 12 noon on Saturday. Radio Borders
will be running a live road show at the event and there will be children's activities, a beer tent and lots of food for sale.
The Big Weekend music event is just what we need in the Borders to match successful events like the Borders Book Festival and others. It all takes strong support from the public and we are very grateful to SBC for its important sponsorship of this event."
