Make reading your mission this summer
Monday, June 26 2006
Your mission, should you choose to accept it ... is to read six great, new books this summer!
That's the challenge local libraries are offering to children over the summer holidays.
The Reading Mission will encourage young readers to be more adventurous in their choice of reading. To complete the challenge,
they must read six specially selected books, each containing an exciting range of secret agent incentives to help them on
their way. The exercise involves code-cracking, puzzle solving and spreading the word about the best holiday reading.
Anyone who takes part in the Reading Mission engages in secret training to become a fully-fledged Reading Agent - licensed to read! Each participant will receive a Reading Mission pack, designed to look like a metallic special agent attaché case. It folds out to give three missions, as well as a place to record the books read during the challenge.
There is also a short story competition to enter and freebies to collect, such as fridge magnets and secret message pens.
At the end of the holidays, children who complete the mission will receive certificates and medals.
So, if you want to be the Borders' answer to Alex Rider, teenage M16 secret agent, look out for details of the Reading Mission at your local library.
