Parker and Purvis hold summit on future of Borders rugby
Wednesday, June 21 2006
Council Leader, David Parker and Jeremy Purvis, MSP for Tweeddale, Ettrick and Lauderdale, met yesterday with various Borders rugby stakeholders to discuss action to safeguard the future of the Borders Pro Rugby Team.
Speaking after the meeting, Councillor David Parker said, "Having a strong and successful Borders Pro Rugby team with a guaranteed future is vital to the Borders. It was clear that all of the representatives present were of the view that the New Ways Partnership needed to work with the Scottish Rugby Union to safeguard the future of the Borders Pro rugby side. There is no doubt in my mind that the New Ways Partners have a part to play in Borders Pro Rugby, and I will be writing to the Chief Executive of the SRU today, offering to engage the New Ways Partners in the discussions about the way forward for the Borders Pro team."
Jeremy Purvis MSP said, "The Borders is the home of rugby and it would be inconceivable for our region not to have a Pro Rugby side. It is important that all those who want to secure the future of Borders rugby work together, in partnership with the SRU, to ensure the continuation of the current pro team.
With last week's overwhelming 'yes' vote on the reinstatement of the Waverley Line, and the development of the Borders College and Heriot-Watt campus at Netherdale, there has never been a better opportunity to ensure the future of Pro Rugby in the Borders."
Jeremy Purvis MSP will be meeting Gordon McKie, Chief Executive of the SRU, next week to discuss the outcome of yesterday's meeting.
