Tartan Army urges football fans to make recycling their goal this summer
Monday, June 5 2006
Despite missing out on the World Cup finals, the Tartan Army is urging football supporters in the Scottish Borders to help recycle some of the extra waste that they will generate during this summer's tournament.
Joining forces with the Scottish Waste Awareness Group (SWAG), the world famous Tartan Army will help promote the BIG Recycle for Scotland 2006.
The annual event - a national recycling initiative which kicks off on 5 June featuring the football theme "Make Recycling Your Goal" - will see events and promotions around the country showing people what, how and where they can recycle.
Recycling in Scotland is already on the increase and in 2005 we recycled and composted 22.8 per cent of our waste1. This means that the average Scottish household recycled the equivalent weight of 37 World Cup trophies2 last year.
With an estimated 4.5 million (89%) of us expected to tune into the World Cup3, fans in Scotland will be creating some extra waste as they watch the action, and so there is no better time to remind people to make recycling their goal. Experts predict that around 103 million cans and bottles will be consumed in Scotland alone4 - all of which can be recycled.
Lending his support to the BIG Recycle for Scotland 2006, Hamish Husband of the association of Tartan Army Clubs, said, "Although we unfortunately won't be at the World Cup, Scots fans can still play their part and make recycling their goal during this year's tournament. As football fans, the Tartan Army will be watching games at home, and we'd urge Scots fans to recycle any extra waste they create.''
He added, "The Tartan Army are known globally as great ambassadors for Scotland, so we're proud to support the BIG Recycle for Scotland 2006 and do our bit to help improve our country's environment.''
Dr Nicki Souter, campaign manager at the Scottish Waste Awareness Group (SWAG), said, "The BIG Recycle for Scotland is a great opportunity to remind people just how easy it is to recycle. With more and more homes now having kerbside recycling collections, and increasing numbers of local recycling centres and points, recycling has never been more convenient.''
As well as cans, glass and paper, you can recycle a wide range of materials during the World Cup period and beyond. To find out more about what, how and where you can recycle in your area, visit www.sort-it.org.uk.
