Council officer is rewarded after 20 years as examiner
Monday, May 29 2006
Martyn Buckley, Scottish Borders Council's Accounting & Projects Manager, has been awarded the 2006 Ian Doig Prize by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (Cipfa) in Scotland.
The award was made in recognition of Martyn's 20-year service as an examiner for Cipfa's professional qualifications. The Ian Doig Prize is awarded each year for innovation, leadership and support to Cipfa, a major UK accountancy body specialising in the public services.
Martyn started as an examiner in 1985 when working at Perth & Kinross District Council and became Senior Examiner for Scotland in 1987. The role required a year-round commitment organising exams, training examiners, assessing candidates in a variety of projects and ensuring overall quality standards.
"I must have overseen the projects of around 1,500 candidates!" Martyn explained. "A good number of these have gone to fill some very senior positions in public service financial management. In addition to a lot of work over the years, I have been lucky enough to work with public sector colleagues from across the UK and Ireland and have made some good friends."
The Ian Doig prize was presented to Martyn by Diane Colley, President of Cipfa UK, at an awards ceremony in Glasgow.
