Women's hockey 7-a-side to resume in June

Monday, May 22 2006

The Borders 2006 seven-a-side women's hockey programme gets underway on 14 June at Galashiels, Duns and Hawick.

This year's league is run by Scottish Borders Council's Sports Development Unit in partnership with the newly constituted South Hockey Development Group.

The programme comprises weekly, evening games for women and girls aged over 16. It is aimed at current players, former players and anyone who wants to have fun keeping fit. Opening games will be held at Tweedbank Outdoor Sports Complex, Galashiels, Berwickshire High School, Duns, and Hawick's all-weather pitch.

John McBay, SBC's Senior Sports Development Officer, said, "Last year's league was such a success that the Hockey Development Group wanted to stage it again this year.  We hope to attract new teams and retain the ones that competed last year. Many women enjoy hockey at school, but, because of the demands of further study and jobs, they may not play again once they leave. This is their chance to take up the game again and benefit from the exercise and social opportunities that sport can offer."

For further information on the Seven-a-side Hockey Initiative, contact SBC's Sports Development Team at 3 St John Street, Galashiels, TD1 3JX, or telephone 01896 756274 for an entry form.
