New group to co-ordinate 125th anniversary of Eyemouth fishing disaster
Thursday, May 18 2006
A new group "125 Memorial Association" has been established to co-ordinate events marking the 125th anniversary of the East Coast Fishing Disaster this year.
The Association will next meet on Wednesday 24 May at 7 pm at the Fishermen's Mission, Eyemouth. Anyone interested in becoming involved in the commemoration is most welcome to attend.
Jim Evans, 125 Memorial Association Chairperson, explained, "Earlier this year, many local communities were beginning to think about the anniversary and how they could commemorate it. Several informal meetings have been attended by a wide range of groups and organisations to discuss ideas and plan some events, which led to a formal Annual General and the election of a small committee."
Among the events which are being planned is a special service on the anniversary day, Saturday 14 October, which will include a wreath-laying ceremony, a play by a local author, poetry recitals and an exhibition at Eyemouth Museum.
The commemorations will involve young people, particularly through the local schools. There will also be references to the
anniversary in other local events such as Eyemouth Herring Queen.
Organisers hope to create a permanent record of the anniversary, such as a memorial book and plaques, to be kept at the Royal
National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen (RNMDSF). There is also the possibility of a commemorative sculpture or public work
of art for Eyemouth and the outlying coastal villages, forming part of a countryside trail.
