A celebration of Newfoundland in the Scottish Borders
Monday, May 15 2006
Two entertainers from the shores of Newfoundland, Jim Payne and Fergus O'Byrne, arrive in the Borders this month during an extensive tour of Northern England and Scotland. They bring Wave over Wave, a collection of songs, tunes and stories from the most easterly province in Canada to Smailholm Village Hall on Friday 19 May.
Newfoundland has strong historical, social, and musical connections with Scotland. Settlers from Europe brought their songs, stories, customs and dialects to the area over centuries. Music, songs, stories and dances remain a primary source of entertainment for these hard-working people who inhabit the many isolated bays and coves that make up the coastline of Newfoundland.
Jim and Fergus will be presenting school shows and workshops throughout the week, finishing with their performance on Friday 19 May at Smailholm Village Hall, Smailholm, near Kelso. The performance is supported by funding through Scottish Borders Council and the Scottish Arts Council. Tickets for the concert are £6/£4 and available on 01573 460216 or from Scottish Borders Council Arts Development on 01750 724901.
