A team of pupils from Hawick High School, winner of the Safe T in the Park Challenge 2005, was presented with its prizes on Friday, 28 April at Selkirk High School.
"The aim of Safe T in the Park is to help young people manage the challenges they encounter as they move into adulthood. It highlights the safety and legal messages of issues like drugs and alcohol, driving and fire safety, as well as giving support on health improvement, personal safety and well-being, and dealing with stress," explained Steve Irvine, Community Safety Officer for Scottish Borders Council. "The event also lets young people have some influence on issues affecting them by putting questions to local councillors and the Police."
Pupils attending the 2005 event were asked to plan a healthy eating initiative for their schools with the help of local businesses. The challenge is in line with the Determined to Succeed school enterprise initiative and the Hungry for Success healthy eating in schools programme.
The winning team was presented with the SAFE T trophy from last year's winners, Selkirk High School. As well as the trophy, the winning team received £250 towards putting their plan into action, and WH Smith vouchers for each team member.
Hawick High School headteacher, Neil Horne, said, "The pupils were delighted to win this award. They had really enjoyed the Safe T day and got a lot out of the challenges involved. They are now looking forward to finding ways of implementing their Promoting Healthy Eating idea in the school."
This year's Safe T in the Park event is being held on 20 September 2006 at Springwood Park in Kelso. The day is based around
10 interactive and fun workshops for teams from the region's nine high schools to explore health and safety issues.
