Deputy First Minister launches strategy to make Borders world-class centre for learning
Wednesday, March 29 2006
Deputy First Minister Nicol Stephen MSP visited the Borders yesterday to launch the region's new Lifelong Learning Strategy. The strategy aims to make the Borders a world-class centre for learning, both for local people and those living outside the region.
It proposes setting up a Borders Learning Hub with a Regional Co-ordinator to provide lifelong education and training through the New Ways partnership, which includes Scottish Borders Council, NHS Borders, Borders College, Lothian & Borders Police, Scottish Enterprise Borders.
Launching the new strategy, Mr Stephen, Minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning, said, "Learning is something that everyone can benefit from and enjoy. I am delighted that the Borders has taken the initiative and produced its own Lifelong Learning Strategy to identify and address particular local needs. I want to ensure that every Scot has the confidence, the enterprise and the skills to play a full part in our economy, and learning is absolutely key to this."
The strategy is set to benefit employers and companies, as well as individuals, by producing well-informed, well-trained and well-motivated staff. It will be flexible, allowing people to access course work and training materials electronically by way of 'e-learning'. Emphasis will be laid on career progression and long-term approaches to career management.
It also aims to build on initiatives already established in the Borders, such as the recently launched website Onlineborders, the Borders Community Grid (www.onlineborders.org.uk).
More than 70 people attended the launch at Tweed Horizons, including local MSPs Jeremy Purvis and Euan Robson MSP. The event was introduced by Dr Bob Murray, Principal of Borders College and Chair of the New Ways Learning Partnership.
